Ever since the Cuyahoga River made headlines for catching on fire because of pollution, Kent has been making efforts to clean up the waterway and have it be known for more positive reasons.
Cathy Ricks, a naturalist with the Kent Parks and Recreation Department, said numerous parks in Kent incorporate the river. They include Fred Fuller Park; Tannery Park; Franklin Mills River Edge Park; Heritage Park, which hosts the Kent dam and the waterfall; and Riverbend Park, where people can put their own canoe or kayak in the water. In addition, a portion of the Portage Hike and Bike trail follows the river in Kent.
Crooked River Adventures, a business affiliated with Kent State University, also allows people to rent a kayak to navigate the river. In addition, the business offers canoes, bikes, tubes and “stand-up paddle boards.”
Annual events include the River Day in May and the Otter Race along the river.
Every River Day, Ricks says she reminds people that “the adventure starts in your own back yard,”
