'A Day in the Country' reservations are due for June 7 event in Hiram

The Women's Council for Hiram College will sponsor "A Day in the Country," an annual Hiram College scholarship benefit function. The event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 7 at the Martin Field House, located on the Hiram College campus on S.R.

Kent Free Library offers book clubs for patrons

The Kent Free Library has a variety of book clubs to offer area residents. Monday Morning Book Group Meets June 5 at 11 a.m.: "Hillbilly Elegy" by J. D. Vance. This book group will meet the first Monday morning of every month at 11 a.m. No registration is required.

Kent resident Judith Gray to study in Belize through Project Dragonfly

Kent resident Judith Gray, a new master's student in the Global Field Program offered through Miami University's Project Dragonfly, will travel to Belize in June to study coral reefs, manatees, howler monkeys, jaguars and other wildlife, while learning the methods communities are using to sustain them.

Shalersville Alumni Association met early this month at the town hall. Anyone who attended Shalersville School is invited to come. It was a slightly smaller group this year, but those who were there enjoyed a wonderful dinner prepared by Eisele Catering.

Free community meal to be held May 28

St. Paul Lutheran Church will continue to provide a free community dinner on the last Sunday of every month. Dinners will be served from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at 170 N. Freedom St., Ravenna. The church is handicap accessible and the dinner is open to the public.

'Miniature Knives' to be meeting topic

The Portage County Knife Collectors Club will meet at 7 p.m. May 30 at the Charlestown Town Hall on Rock Spring Road. The theme for this month's meeting will be on "Miniature Knives," knives that are three inches long or less. There will be several examples on display by members.

Plans are set for Atwater Memorial Day

The Atwater Lions are planning the 2017 Atwater Memorial Day parade for May 29. The parade lineup will be on Bank Street at noon and step off at 12:30 p.m. The parade will move down Waterloo Road and S.R. 183, to end at the Atwater Town Hall.

The Ravenna Lions recently presented selected students of the fifth-grade classes of Carlin Elementary, West Main Elementary and Willard Elementary schools in Ravenna at the 50th Annual Roy Smith Memorial Junior Citizenship Awards Dinner. The event sponsor was the Ravenna United Fund.
